YouTube India has said that they will temporarily set HD and Ultra-HD streams to SD by default, the bitrate on mobile networks will not exceed 480p. This decision has been made until 14 April. In addition to YouTube, the company has created a promo card on its homepage that links to the MoHFW website for up-to-date information about coronavirus (Covid-19). Information about coronaviruses, search results and videos will also be provided through trusted sources such as trusted organizations. A specially prepared playlist of tips to prevent the spread of the virus will also be shown.
A Google spokesman said in a statement that the company would continue to work closely with governments and network operators around the world to reduce the pressure on the system in this unprecedented situation. Google added that last week the company temporarily announced that all video for the European Union would be set to SD by default and now the company is going to implement it worldwide.
According to YouTube, these measures will be released worldwide in the next few days and will remain in effect for about 30 days.
Many streaming services like Netflix, Disney +, Amazon Prime, Hotstar are also taking steps to reduce network stress. Even Disney + ready to launch in Europe with low quality to reduce network tension due to increased use of users working from home
Netflix has also slashed video quality in India over the next 30 days to smooth out Internet traffic. Hotstar has also locked the quality to SD on its platform.
